Alaska police say 1 killed in hotel shootout (AP)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? Alaska police say that one person has been killed in a shooting at an Anchorage Hotel.

Lt. Dave Parker says police locked down the Millennium Hotel Saturday night and are searching for a suspect.

Media reports say half a dozen police cars and two ambulances were at the site and officers armed with rifles were covering an exit.

Parker tells The Associated Press that police have identified the suspect. No motive has been established, but Parker says investigators have determined that the victim had been targeted and it wasn't a random attack.

He says police have also surrounded the suspect's residence in Anchorage.

Parker says hotel guests have been asked to remain in their rooms to await evacuation as police methodically search the building.

No one else has been injured

Cro Cop loses final fight at UFC 137, Nelson uses belly and power to finish him off

LAS VEGAS - Mirko Filipovic put on dozens of tremendous shows for fans of mixed martials, so the ending at UFC 137 was fitting. The 37-year-old brought it and tried to slug it out with Roy Nelson, but the younger fighter's well-rounded game took over in the second and he scored a TKO win at the 1:30 mark of third at UFC 137.

"Cro Cop" was one of the most feared fighters in the world during his time with PRIDE fighting in Japan. His run with the UFC was less than stellar, but the fans never lost their for the Crotian kickboxer. Even tonight, the Las Vegas crowd went nuts anytime Cro Cop landed.

"This is going to be my final fight. I didn't make a goodbye victory," a sad Cro Cop told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "Roy was just better tonight. I want to thank all you guys, especially UFC fans."

[Related: UFC 137: Penn, 'Cro Cop' set to retire after losses]

Cro Cop (27-10) was very much in the fight until the middle of the second round. Two minutes in, he rocked Nelson with a shot and then got off 20-25 unanswered shots. Nelson covered up and survived, and then scored a very important takedown with 2:35 left.

Nelson quickly moved to side control where he worked for the dominant crucifix position. Once he got it with less than 45 seconds left, he pounded away on the helpless Cro Cop. Nelson, who came into this fight about 15-17 pounds less than previous fights, still has a good-sized belly. He used that to his advantage as he smothered the 37-year-0ld. Cro Cop survived the round, but when he rose to his feet his face was all marked up.

In the third, his legs weren't there and he drilled by a straight right. Cro Cop went into retreat mode. A little over minute into the round, he got dropped by a left. Nelson jumped on top, got his hook in and flattened him out. He threw four or five big bombs to the side of Cro Cop's head and it was stopped.

Girls' Generation Dish On Hazards Of Making 'The Boys' Video

'A pigeon comes out and that pigeon flies all over the place ...,' Korean girl group member Jessica explains.

The phenomenon that is Girls' Generation is making its mark in the United States. Last week, the Korean pop girl group released their latest music video, "The Boys," and with 13 million YouTube views in just over a week, it's clear that fans love it.

On Monday, all nine Girls' Generation members stopped by MTV News and told us that they are still in shock that so many fans have checked out their latest effort.

"We have never expected many people to view our videos," Sooyung said. "So we are surprised and would like to have more chances to meet our fans in other countries."

The Teddy Riley-produced song is the first single off their third studio album, The Boys, which was released worldwide on October 19, the same day their video was released. The sexy, upbeat video shows off the girls' dance moves, highly stylized wardrobe and over-the-top set designs.

"All the sets were supposed to portray water, sand, and roses ... somewhat environmental," Tiffany explained. "It turned out so well, so we were all very pleased."

In one of the scenes, the girls walk in slow motion through a rain shower of rose petals, but shooting that particular scene was not as glamorous as it looked. "It was really hard to keep our eyes open during the rose petal scenes because they would use the same rose petals over and over, so I don't know how they got rid of the dust, but there was a lot of dust," Tiffany said.

Dust wasn't the only thing Girls' Generation had to watch out for on the shoot. The girls recruited a 10th member to join their group for the video, which unfortunately didn't turn out as planned.

"There was a pigeon. A pigeon comes out and that pigeon flies all over the place and guess what?" Jessica laughed while explaining the pigeon's "accident." "It actually happened on the collarbone of Sunny's."

"Luckily she has short hair," Tiffany added. "But it was funnier because Sunny didn't know that it happened."

"I actually told her," Jessica said. "I'm like, what is that?" And of course, with nine girls on the set of a music video, you can bet there were a whole lot of laughs.

"There are scenes with all the lights off, like the silhouette scenes," Tiffany said. "We were screaming and laughing while doing the scenes because you don't see our faces." Girls' Generation's first U.S. maxi-single will be released on November 19.

What do you think of "The Boys" video? Let us know in the comments.

Ford's Driver Alert System keeps you in the right lane, recommends java on occasion

It ain't the first automaker to do so, but Ford's taking a step in the 'stay in your own lane!' direction with a new technology package for the Explorer. The Driver Alert System is slated to launch in early 2012, and it'll tout new lane keeping technologies, including a system that can help detect drowsy drivers. The goal here is to keep sleepyheads from destroying lives -- be it their own or others -- by suggesting that they pull over, rest and have a sip of coffee if they've been cruising along for an extended period of time. Furthermore, a camera setup will monitor one's lane position, and if they drift too far away from the straight and narrow, their steering wheel will vibrate. It all sounds good and well, but the fact that a AAA survey found that over 40 percent of Americans have "fallen asleep or nodded off while driving" makes 'staying at home' seem like the sensible choice.

Pujols decision can wait for Cardinals

(AP) ? Albert Pujols tried to give away nothing during the celebration, tried to stay in the moment. But what a moment it was.

Getting another taste of that championship feeling surely will tip the scales in favor of the St. Louis Cardinals at least a little bit when it comes time to talk contract.

"Obviously, right now a lot of things go through my head and thinking about the whole season," Pujols said at the podium after the Cardinals won their 11th World Series.

"Probably like two or three weeks from now, that's when I'm really going to be sitting down and saying, 'Wow, where we were, and now we're the 2011 World Champions.' It's unbelievable."

What remained of Friday after the Cardinals finished off the Texas Rangers in Game 7 was for savoring one of the most unlikely comebacks in major league history. Hundreds of fans peacefully roamed the downtown streets well into the night.

"Truly a dream come true," manager Tony La Russa said. "It's hard to really imagine it actually happened."

On Sunday, the team will bask in adulation once again with a victory parade scheduled for late afternoon. In 2006, the team estimated between 300,000 and a half-milllion people lined the streets.

Five players remain from 2006, when the Cardinals backed into the postseason as an 83-win team and then got hot when key players got healthy. Pujols, Yadier Molina, Skip Schumaker and Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright remain from that team, which also was lightly regarded.

Can't top 2011.

"This team is unbelievable," Carpenter said after beating the Rangers for the second time. "Most amazing team I've ever been a part of."

General manager John Mozeliak takes special satisfaction in the championship. The moves he made at the trade deadline for shortstop Rafael Furcal, starter Edwin Jackson and three relievers finally paid off in September, and well beyond.

"All you can do is live and die with your club," Mozeliak said. "To sit here now and be on top, it's just a wonderful experience."

Mozeliak can't celebrate for long, though.

"I would say I have about a 72-hour window to enjoy this," Mozeliak said. "And then right back it Monday."

A weighty decision looms: Can the Cardinals persuade Pujols to stay? Would extra millions he might make elsewhere compensate for shedding the role of local icon?

He seemed pretty proud about his place in St. Louis after Game 7.

"It doesn't matter the numbers, it doesn't matter the records, it doesn't matter the money that you make," Pujols said. "What matters is to raise that trophy and to be able to bring that smile to the city of St. Louis.

"And not just the city of St. Louis, but all our fans around the world."

Mozeliak has more than just Pujols on his plate. But after the postseason, the roster just seemed so much deeper.

October brought out new stars in third baseman David Freese, the MVP of both the NLCS and World Series, and Allen Craig, whose big bat helped the team overcome injuries to cleanup hitter Matt Holliday.

Freese was the Cardinals' most dangerous hitter throughout the playoffs.

"The nation started to see what type of talent he is," Mozeliak said. "We always knew what we had, it was just a matter of keeping healthy and on the field.

"When he's healthy, you can see he is an elite player."

Craig's homer was the go-ahead hit in Game 7, and then he robbed Nelson Cruz of a homer with a catch high above the left field wall.

"His expectations of himself are to be an everyday major league player, and a good one," Mozeliak said. "Our job is going to find him at-bats."

Pitching stalwarts emerged, too. Hard-throwing Jason Motte nailed down the closer role that was up for grabs most of the year. Relievers Marc Rzepczynski and Lance Lynn stepped up alongside veterans Octavio Dotel and Arthur Rhodes, who both played in their first World Series.

All five starters are under contract for next season.

If Pujols decides to leave, there is a Plan B. Berkman, the NL comeback player of the year, could move to first and Craig could be the regular right fielder.

And the Cardinals would have plenty left to spend on other upgrades. They've expressed interest in retaining Furcal, but at much less than his $12 million option.

Jackson is a free agent, too, and a player the Cardinals had figured they were just renting. That championship feeling had him thinking St. Louis was the place to be.

"Man, if we could be like this every year, why not?" Jackson said. "I'm sure the city is going crazy right now and without them we couldn't have gotten it done."

The victory parade will be led by a team of Budweiser Clydesdales and include marching bands from four area high schools, with players riding atop trucks. A ceremony will follow at Busch Stadium.

Insects are scared to death of fish

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2011) ? The mere presence of a predator causes enough stress to kill a dragonfly, even when the predator cannot actually get at its prey to eat it, say biologists at the University of Toronto.

"How prey respond to the fear of being eaten is an important topic in ecology, and we've learned a great deal about how these responses affect predator and prey interactions," says Professor Locke Rowe, chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) and co-principal investigator of a study conducted at U of T's Koffler Scientific Reserve.

"As we learn more about how animals respond to stressful conditions -- whether it's the presence of predators or stresses from other natural or human-caused disruptions -- we increasingly find that stress brings a greater risk of death, presumably from things such as infections that normally wouldn't kill them," says Rowe.

Shannon McCauley, a post-doctoral fellow, and EEB professors Marie-Jos?e Fortin and Rowe raised juvenile dragonfly larvae (Leucorrhinia intacta) in aquariums or tanks along with their predators. The two groups were separated so that while the dragonflies could see and smell their predators, the predators could not actually eat them.

"What we found was unexpected -- more of the dragonflies died when predators shared their habitat," says Rowe. Larvae exposed to predatory fish or aquatic insects had survival rates 2.5 to 4.3 times less than those not exposed.

In a second experiment, 11 per cent of larvae exposed to fish died as they attempted to metamorphose into their adult stage, compared to only two per cent of those growing in a fish-free environment. "We allowed the juvenile dragonflies to go through metamorphosis to become adult dragonflies, and found those that had grown up around predators were more likely to fail to complete metamorphosis successfully, more often dying in the process," says Rowe.

The scientists suggest that their findings could apply to all organisms facing any amount of stress, and that the experiment could be used as a model for future studies on the lethal effects of stress.

The research is described in a paper titled "The deadly effects of 'nonlethal' predators," published in Ecology and highlighted in Nature this week. It was supported by grants to Fortin and Rowe from the Canada Research Chairs program and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and a post-doctoral fellowship awarded to McCauley.

Nayef named Saudi crown prince (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has appointed Interior Minister Prince Nayef as the new crown prince, the Royal Court said in a statement issued Friday, signaling an orderly process of future succession in the world's largest oil exporter.

"We chose His Royal Highness Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz as crown prince," said the statement, read on state television and carried on the kingdom's news agency SPA soon after midnight.

It said Nayef, who is in his 70s, was appointed after King Abdullah took his choice to a royal family body called the Allegiance Council, set up in 2006 to make the process of succession in the conservative Islamic nation smoother and more orderly.

It was the first time the council had been involved in the appointment of a new crown prince, a move that analysts had said would help to regulate an opaque system of succession.

Crown Prince Sultan died of colon cancer in New York almost a week ago. He was also the kingdom's defense and aviation minister for nearly five decades. No replacements for these positions have yet been appointed.

At stake is the stability of a key U.S. ally, whose ruling al-Saud family wields great influence over Sunni Muslims through its guardianship of Islam's holiest sites in Mecca and Medina.

Just over a century ago, King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud recaptured the family's historical stronghold of Riyadh from a rival clan, setting his family on a path of conquest from the Red Sea to the Gulf that eventually made the sleepy oasis town the capital of the world's foremost oil power.

As interior minister since 1975, a post to which he was reappointed in the Royal Court statement, Nayef has developed a reputation as a conservative with close ties to the Saudi religious establishment.

Nayef is sometimes portrayed as putting the brakes on the King Abdullah's cautious reforms which aim to reconcile the kingdom's conservative Islamic traditions with a youthful, increasingly outward looking population in the Middle East's largest economy.

Some 60 percent of Saudis are under the age of 30 and Internet penetration is 44 percent, according to internetworldstats.com.

DIFFERING VIEWS

Earlier this year Nayef publicly admonished a member of the mainly consultative Shura Council who had called for a review of the ban on women driving.

"This means less for Saudi Arabia's external relations than it does internally because a lot of people there, especially women, are apprehensive that Nayef will close back down some of the space that Abdullah has opened up around individual citizens," said Thomas Lippman, a Saudi Arabia specialist at the Middle East Institute in Washington.

However, analysts and former diplomats in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, say Crown Prince Nayef might show a different side to his character in his new position.

In recent years he has already run the kingdom on a day-to-day basis when King Abdullah and Prince Sultan were both absent. King Abdullah's recurrent back problem has caused him to go abroad for medical treatment.

Nayef, a half-brother of King Abdullah, was born around 1933 in Taif, the pretty mountain town where the royal court repaired each year to escape the stifling summer of the capital Riyadh and the second city Jeddah.

Saudi Arabia had only a year earlier come into being after Nayef's father King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud united the Bedouin tribes behind his vision of a pure Islamic state and conquered much of the Arabian Peninsula.

Growing up in the royal court of the 1930s and 1940s, Nayef is of the last generation of Saudis who knew the austere desert kingdom before the first flush of oil wealth changed it beyond all recognition.

As interior minister, Nayef led a successful effort to end a wave of al Qaeda attacks inside the kingdom from 2003.

Television footage on Saudi news channels Thursday showed some leading members of the al-Saud family receiving mourners for Crown Prince Sultan at the Yamama Palace in Riyadh.

One robed prince followed another in a sea of red and white headdresses, camel-hair cloaks and gold trim as members of the expansive royal family stepped forward to offer a brief embrace to the full brothers of Crown Prince Sultan.

His death has also opened up another vacancy at the top of government: the crucial role of defense minister in a country that uses multi-billion dollar arms purchases to make its military one of the best equipped in the Middle East and to cement ties with allies.

Once-exonerated convict dies during Conn. appeal (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A Connecticut man whose murder conviction was overturned but later reinstated has died of colon cancer while awaiting a new appeal trial.

Ronald Taylor's lawyer issued a statement Wednesday saying Taylor died Tuesday in Cheshire after a two-year cancer fight.

Taylor and co-defendant George Gould were convicted of killing a New Haven grocery shop owner in 1993 and sentenced to 80 years in prison. Both were freed in April 2010 after a state judge ruled they were victims of "manifest injustice" and declared them "actually innocent." The judge's ruling came after a key witness recanted her trial testimony.

In July, the state Supreme Court reinstated the murder convictions, saying the judge was wrong to overturn them. Gould was sent back to prison; Taylor was allowed to remain out on bail.

Bevan Dufty: I'm a Proud Gay Dad Who Happens to Be Running for San Francisco Mayor

I'm proud to be a gay dad with a beautiful child who has a wonderful lesbian mom.

Recently, Congressman Jared Polis (D-Colo.) became the first openly gay parent in congressional history. But just this month conservative religious leaders in Honduras asked the government to deny Ricky Martin -- a gay dad with twins -- the right to visit their country and perform at an October concert.

We've made a great deal of progress, but there is so much more to be done.

In 2002, I was elected to represent the same seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors once held by Harvey Milk. His was an example of standing tall and doing what's right. I've always sought to break ground in standing up for LGBT families -- so, of course, I'm proud that my first ad in the San Francisco mayor's race shows me as a parent and father, the most important job I could ever hope to hold:

If elected, I will be the first LGBT mayor of San Francisco, and I will use this position to break ground and stand up to bullies -- from the halls of America's schools to the halls of Congress.

Campaigns like this aren't easy to keep on the air in an expensive media market like San Francisco. But, we're already seeing the impact of this ad as online donations from San Franciscans and others supportive of my message have begun to pour in to keep our first ad on the air.

So much attention has been paid to my first television commercial in this campaign, but to me this isn't just politics. It represents something deeper than that. People see in my story their own families -- whether they are households with LGBT parents or straight ones.

After all, isn't that the point? So many in our world seek to divide us. It is the simple things like family that can unite us.

Officials say India close to wiping out polio

(AP) ? Health officials say there has not been a case of polio in India for nine months, the longest the country has ever been polio free.

India's health ministry says the country has never been closer to wiping out the debilitating disease since eradication efforts were launched here nearly two decades ago.

India remains one of only four countries in the world where polio is still endemic.

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Monday the last new case was reported in January in West Bengal state and no cases were reported in the traditional polio reservoirs of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

He said any fresh case of the virus would be declared a public health emergency.

French digitial kitchen is a recipe for success

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2011) ? An innovative kitchen that gives step-by-step cooking instructions in French could spark a revolution in language learning in the UK.

From pear clafouti to croque monsieur, real-time cooking instructions for preparing each recipe are delivered in a similar way to an in-car sat nav.

Motion sensor-technology on the kitchen equipment and ingredients then help track whether each step has been completed successfully.

Developed by language experts and computer scientists at Newcastle University, the kitchen breaks new ground by taking language learning out of the classroom and combining it with an enjoyable and rewarding real-life activity.

It is supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's Digital Economy Programme.

"This really brings foreign culture to life," said Paul Seedhouse, Professor of Education & Applied Linguistics (pictured). "Students are able to learn aspects of the language while performing a meaningful task and experiencing the cultural aspect of learning to cook a French dish at the same time.

"You never really understand something properly until you do it for yourself, and one of the universal problems of classroom language teaching is that students are often rehearsing, rather than actually using the language.

"Our overriding objective is to make language learning more enjoyable, more effective and, by linking it to the development of another valuable life skill, more educational too."

The kitchen builds on the proven technique of Task-Based Language Learning (TBLL), an effective teaching method where students are prompted by instructions in a foreign language to carry out specified tasks.

But TBLL has never previously involved instruction in a life skill like cooking, which will help to inspire and motivate users and accelerate their learning.

The new kitchen is designed to be installed in schools, universities and even people's homes and could be available commercially by the end of 2012. The first version of the technology was trialled in the catering kitchens of project partner Newcastle College.

A series of portable versions of the kitchen have now been developed which are being taken out on roadshows to schools across the North East.

The Newcastle University team is now exploring routes to commercialisation. An EU grant of ?400K has also been obtained to develop English, German, Spanish, Italian, Finnish and Catalan versions. Ultimately, the digital kitchen could be developed for any language/cuisine in the world.

Professor Seedhouse, of the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences has led the project in conjunction with Professor Patrick Olivier of the School of Computing Science.

"By international standards, the UK is low down on the league table when it comes to learning languages -- a problem that inevitably has an economic impact," he said. "We believe that simultaneously developing skills in a country's language and its cuisine will help reverse the trend."

On a tablet or laptop computer incorporated into the kitchen, the user first selects the French recipe they want to follow. Digital sensors built into utensils, ingredient containers and other equipment then communicate with the computer to make sure the right instructions are given at the right time, or to give feedback to the user if they go wrong.

At any time, the user can ask for an instruction or a piece of information to be repeated, or translated into English, simply by pressing the touch screen.

All grammar and vocabulary has been carefully selected to ensure that using the kitchen adds to basic proficiency in understanding French. After a session, the user can see what they have learnt by carrying out a short test on the computer.

Three portable versions of the kitchen, comprising the computer and a set of sensor-enabled kitchen equipment, are now being prepared. These are to be installed in Newcastle College and at Institut Fran?ais, a London-based charity dedicated to teaching the French language.

The 18-month 'Language Learning in the Wild' project has received total EPSRC funding of nearly ?163,000. The project has adapted technology that was initially developed for Newcastle University's Ambient Kitchen, designed to help people with dementia and also developed with EPSRC funding.

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday urged Afghanistan's Central Asian neighbors to play a role in securing and rebuilding the country as American forces withdraw over the next three years.

She also pressed authorities in the region about improving their record on human rights.

Before arriving to Uzbekistan, Clinton told an audience in Tajikistan that Afghanistan's reintegration into the regional economy would be critical to its recovery from war, as well as for better conditions in surrounding countries.

Afghanistan has been at "the crossroads for terrorism and insurgency and so much pain and suffering over 30 years," she said. "We want Afghanistan to be at the crossroads of economic opportunities going north and south and east and west, which is why it's so critical to more fully integrate the autonomies of the countries in this region in South and Central Asia."

Clinton was promoting the concept of a "new Silk Road" that would increase regional trade and commerce.

"We hope it will give rise to a network of thriving economic relationships around the region," she said. But, Clinton added, countries would have to remove or ease trade restrictions and reform commercial laws for the scheme to succeed.

On human rights, Clinton told a town hall meeting in Dushanbe that she would raise the issue with the leaders of both Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

In Tajikistan, she said she spoke to President Emomali Rakhmonov about her concerns over restrictions on press and religious freedoms. In particular, she cited attempts to register certain faiths and efforts to discourage younger people from embracing the worship of their choice.

Tajikistan, a Muslim nation with a secular government, is keen to prevent its youth from adopting extremist Islamic views.

But this kind of strategy, Clinton warned, often backfires.

"It could push legitimate religious expression underground and that could build up a lot of unrest and discontent," she told reporters at a news conference with the Tajik foreign minister. "You have to look at the consequences. We don't want to do anything that breeds extremism."

U.S. officials said she would bring a similar message to Uzbek President Islam Karimov.

Clinton defended her meeting with Karimov, whose government has been accused of numerous serious rights abuses.

She said it was important to try to raise "issues of human rights and rule of law, the kind of fundamental freedoms that the U.S. strongly supports.

"If you have no contact, you have no influence and other countries will fill that vacuum that do not care about human rights and fundamental freedoms," she said. "So I would rather be raising these issues than be outside."

Human Rights Watch has called on her to link improvements to continued U.S. engagement.

Clinton was the highest-ranking American official to visit Tashkent since the U.S. last month lifted 7-year-old restrictions on assistance to the country. The restrictions were imposed because of rights abuses.

Clinton arrived in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe on Friday from stops in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where she demanded greater cooperating in dealing with militants and encouraging insurgents to talk peace.

Clinton is at the tail end of a weeklong, seven-nation overseas trip that has already taken her to Malta, Libya, Oman, Afghanistan and Pakistan. She planned to return to Washington on Sunday.

More Data Was Transmitted Over the Internet in 2010 Than All Previous Years Combined [VIDEO] (Mashable)

[More from Mashable: Google?s Sergey Brin: ?I?m Not a Very Social Person Myself?]

There was more data transmitted over the Internet in 2010 than the entire history of the Internet through 2009.

Now the transfer of data over the Internet is growing faster than ever, said Vice President of Intel's Architecture Group Kirk Skaugen during the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. He also explained how infrastructure is scaling with the increasing transfer of data.

[More from Mashable: Google Analytics Launches In-Depth Flow Visualizations]

Skaugen said although there are currently 4 billion connected devices around the world, Intel expects that number to increase to 15 billion by 2015 and 50 billion by 2020.

Many servers and computers will face challenges from these increases, including those that support the 48 hours of YouTube videos uploaded each minute, 200 million tweets sent per day and 7.5 billion photos uploaded to Facebook each month.

To support this amount of data sharing around the world, Intel and other computer companies have to find ways to make the Internet hardware cheaper and easier to use. It is an extension of Moore's Law, and is necessary for the expected increases in data sharing.

"When Intel entered the server market, the average server price was $58,000, and today we're under $3,800 and dropping," said Skaugen.

Check out the video above to learn about the challenges of powering the new social web, and let us know what you think of Skaugen's talk in the comments.

Captain Scott?s Lost Photographs

The whereabouts of most of the photographs Robert Falcon Scott took around the 1910-13 expedition?s winter quarters on Ross Island and while on the journey toward the South Pole were long a mystery. The unpublished photos had apparently languished in a commercial archive for decades. Here are some of the images that the polar historian David M. Wilson has published in ?The Lost Photographs of Captain Scott,? along with descriptions of where and when they were taken, as best Mr. Wilson could determine.

3-D simulations of nova explosions

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? A new study has shown how mixing of elements occurs during a nova explosion, thus solving an enigma that has puzzled stellar astrophysicists for over half a century.

Scientists at the Universitat Polit?cnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC) have for the first time simulated critical phenomena that occur during nova explosions. Their work has made it possible to precisely characterise the physical properties and chemical composition of the material ejected in novae, and this has yielded the solution to an enigma that has puzzled experts for over 50 years: the origin of the irregular, inhomogeneous distribution of nova ejecta.

The paper, published recently in Nature, has facilitated analysis of the role these thermonuclear explosions play in the chemical enrichment of the galaxy.

As a result of the complex nuclear phenomena that take place inside stars, the universe has evolved from a chemically poor state -- dominated exclusively by the presence of hydrogen, helium, and traces of lithium -- to one containing nearly a hundred stable elements. Without the variety of elements now present in the cosmos, the formation of structures like planets and stars and the genesis of live forms -- including the calcium in our bones, the iron in our blood, and the uranium we use in our nuclear power plants -- would have been impossible. Most of chemical elements originated in supernovae and novae, titanic stellar explosions.

Novae are cataclysmic stellar phenomena that take place in binary systems consisting of a compact stellar object (a white dwarf star the size of a planet but with a mass of up to 1.4 times that of the Sun) and a low-mass star. The stars must be close enough for the intense gravitational field of the white dwarf to tear material away from the outer layers of its companion.

Novae, which are relatively frequent in our galaxy (some 30 to 35 nova-like explosions occur each year), are the third most energetic stellar explosions in the universe, after supernovae and gamma-ray bursts.

Novae and supernovae have been observed by humans for over two thousand years. The way these stars suddenly become much brighter -- a change sometimes observable to the naked eye -- has given rise to a great variety of conjectures about their origin.

With the advent of new, more precise observational techniques (such as photometry and spectroscopy) experts have been able to precisely characterise some physical properties of the material ejected during nova explosions, such as its chemical composition. Scientists know that the material transferred by the companion star is often of solar composition (i.e., close to 98% hydrogen and helium by mass). But other elements, in the range between carbon (C) and calcium (Ca) on the periodic table, can account for 30% to 50% of the material ejected during a nova explosion.

The origin of this peculiar pattern of chemical abundances and their irregular distribution in nova ejecta is an enigma in the field of stellar astrophysics that has eluded explanation for almost half a century. According to the most likely hypothesis, when the material transferred by the companion star piles up on the white dwarf, mixing episodes occur at the interface between the outer layers of the white dwarf and the envelope of transferred material. But the characterisation of this mixing process has provoked vivid discussions. One of the proposed mechanisms could not be rigorously simulated until sufficiently powerful computational tools were available.

Simulations with the MareNostrum supercomputer

Now, a team of researchers led by Jordi Casanova, a PhD student, Jordi Jos?, a Professor of Physics at UPC's Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering, and Enrique Garc?a-Berro, Professor of Physics at the Department of Applied Physics, has shown that the accumulation of material on the white dwarf via this mechanism is unstable. This instability results in mixing episodes involving material at the interface between the outer layers of the white dwarf (rich in elements like carbon and oxygen, or oxygen and neon) and the envelope of transferred material. The researchers were also able to establish the extent of heavy-element enhancement caused by this phenomenon, which up to now had been deduced from observational data.

This phenomenon was demonstrated based on 3-D simulations of the mixing process, which the team performed for the first time for nova explosions. The simulations were possible thanks to the use of sophisticated tools like the MareNostrum computer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre -- Centro Nacional de Supercomputaci?n (BSC-CNS), after 150,000 hours of calculation.

The possibility of recreating 3-D physical phenomena like convection under the conditions that prevail during nova explosions also led to a solution to the second part of the puzzle. Scientists already knew how energy transport by convection works in stars but could offer only a formal account of this phenomenon. Now, thanks to the study conducted by the UPC researchers, it has been numerically shown that, under the conditions that exist during a nova explosion, the matter (plasma) is in a turbulent state; its movement is unstructured, almost chaotic.

The intermittent nature of this turbulence results in irregularities in the chemical distribution of material in ejected envelopes. Up until now, this phenomenon had never been numerically tested in nova explosions (in fact it had not even been proposed as a hypothesis to explain the origin of the observed chemical heterogeneity). The heterogeneity was attributed until now to a lack of precision in the measuring process. The UPC study shows that this phenomenon is real, and that it is caused by the intermittent nature of the turbulent phenomena that occur in stellar plasma as it undergoes a thermonuclear explosion.

Researchers Jordi Casanova and Jordi Jos? are attached to the Barcelona College of Industrial Engineering (EUETIB) and the Space Studies Institute of Catalonia; Enrique Garc?a-Berro is attached to the Castelldefels School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering (EETAC) and the Space Studies Institute of Catalonia.

Steven Shore of the University of Pisa (Italy) and Alan Calder of Stony Brook University (USA) also participated in the project, which has received support from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Government of Catalonia (through the Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants), the European Union's ERDF programme, and the European Science Foundation.

Labor talks break off putting more games in doubt (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Marathon talks between NBA players and owners to resolve a long-running labor dispute that has put the entire season on hold broke off on Thursday with little sign of progress toward a deal, raising the likelihood of more games being canceled.

The two sides met for five hours on the third straight day of talks with federal mediator George Cohen but emerged without a breakthrough, nor any schedule to re-convene.

"Ultimately, we were unable to bridge the gap that separates the two parties," NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver told NBA TV. "We understand the ramifications of where we are. We're saddened on behalf of the game."

NBA Commissioner David Stern was unable to attend Thursday's meeting with the flu, but the outstanding differences between the parties will likely see him scrap more games.

The pre-season and the first two weeks of the regular season had already been canceled due to the protracted lockout that began on July 1 after the players and owners failed to reach a new collective bargaining agreement.

The delayed season's start was re-set for November 1 but that now appears optimistic as the dispute drags on.

NBA owners contend the league lost $300 million last season with 22 of 30 teams in the red and initially demanded players cut their share of basketball-related income from 57 to 47 percent from the previous collective bargaining agreement, along with a firm salary cap and shorter contracts.

The players offered to reduce their share from 57 to 53 percent, and lowered that to 52.5 percent on Thursday.

The owners have formally proposed a 50-50 split but the players union rejected the offer and both sides remain divided on the core issues.

La Russa's moves pay off, Cards win Series opener (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Texas manager Ron Washington joked about not being able to match wits with Tony La Russa.

No joke.

Who can, these days?

The St. Louis boss looked like a genius once again in Game 1, especially when Allen Craig pinch-hit for ace Chris Carpenter and delivered a go-ahead single that sent the Cardinals past the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Craig's slicing hit with two outs in the sixth inning fell inches in front of sliding right fielder Nelson Cruz. Game 1 was just that tight throughout a cold, damp evening.

It was a game perfectly suited for La Russa ? lots of bunts, intentional walks and pitching changes. And in a postseason in which he's made all the right moves, the 67-year-old manager was at the top of his game.

"It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out," Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman said. "But I feel like we have to win the National League-style games if we're going to win this thing and tonight was a National League-style game ? 3-2, good pitching, good defense, timely hitting.

"I don't think that we want to get into a gorilla ball-type series with these guys. We'll see what happens when we add the DH and go to the American League ballpark, but I think when we have the National League style and we have the advantage we have to capitalize."

The Cardinals did, barely. A sliding stop by first baseman Albert Pujols helped prevent Texas from taking the lead on Carpenter's final pitch in the sixth.

St. Louis even won without its Rally Squirrel. There were no sightings of the elusive critter still roaming Busch Stadium ? good thing for the rodent, too, because La Russa probably would've devised a way to catch him.

Game 2 is Thursday night, with Jaime Garcia starting for the Cards against Colby Lewis. Texas has not lost two straight games since Aug. 23-25.

In a postseason where St. Louis and Texas starters have struggled, Carpenter and C.J. Wilson each pitched well enough. They both left in the bottom of the sixth when the managerial wheels started to spin.

It was 2-all when the Rangers worked around eighth-place hitter Nick Punto with a four-pitch walk that put runners at the corners with two outs.

"I know they had either Carpenter coming up or a pinch-hitter, and with Ogando warming up behind me, I have confidence that he's going to come in and get that guy out," Wilson said.

La Russa did not hesitate, pulling Carpenter and sending up Craig, a versatile player who was injured for much of the season. Washington countered by bringing in hard-throwing reliever Alexi Ogando.

Rather risky lately, trying to play baseball chess with La Russa. As Washington said a day earlier: "Well, I don't think I can ever live up to matching a wit with Tony La Russa."

La Russa liked Craig's chances.

"Cold weather game, sitting on the bench, Ogando. It's not a very good situation," La Russa said. "But he's got a history in our system, that's why we like him so much. He should have a really good career."

All the pieces in place, it was time to play ? and what followed was the play of the game.

Craig swung through two fastballs, then hit a drive toward the right field line. Cruz tried to make a sliding catch, except the ball bounced just before it reached him and thudded off his left leg for an RBI single.

Craig's single scored NL championship series MVP David Freese, the St. Louis area prep star who led off with a double. Freese has hit in 11 straight postseason games.

"Man, he's tough," Craig said of Ogando. "He came right at me with fastballs, and I missed the first two. Then that last one I was trying to get the barrel on it, make the defense make a play. Fortunate, kept it fair, and Cruz made a great attempt on that. It was a great play all-around."

Ahead, La Russa coaxed three scoreless innings from his deep bullpen. Five relievers did the job, with Jason Motte closing for his fifth save of the postseason.

This was the first time Texas had ever played in St. Louis. Yet Josh Hamilton, Cruz and the big-hitting Rangers looked a lot like the team that fizzled at the plate in last year's World Series against San Francisco.

Each team wound up with six hits. The wild-card Cardinals just did more with them.

Berkman put St. Louis ahead with a two-run single in the fourth. Mike Napoli tied it with a two-run homer in the fifth.

Carpenter earned his eighth postseason win, breaking the team record he shared with Bob Gibson. Of course, all of Gibby's victories came in the World Series.

Texas nearly took the lead on Carpenter's final pitch. Instead, Pujols smothered Michael Young's grounder behind the bag and tossed to Carpenter to end the sixth with a runner on third.

Carpenter helped himself with a nifty play in the first inning, diving to catch a toss from Pujols and tagging the bag with his glove. He didn't argue when La Russa removed him ? all the Cards know too well to doubt La Russa's smarts.

Cardinals relievers Fernando Salas, Marc Rzepczynski, Octavio Dotel, Arthur Rhodes and Motte finished.

Wilson fell to 0-5 in his last seven postseason starts, dating to last year.

The Texas lefty recently spent 2 1/2 minutes in a Dallas cryotherapy chamber, where liquid nitrogen lowered the temperature to 295 degrees below zero trying to speed body recovery. It was a bit warmer at the ballpark, at 49 degrees for the first pitch.

Wilson became the first pitcher to lose an All-Star game, an AL division series game, an AL championship series game and a World Series game in the same year, STATS LLC said.

Napoli kept up his season of slugging, hitting a two-run homer in the fifth that made it 2-all. He had come into the game 3 for 3 lifetime against Carpenter and had been the only Texas hitter to homer off him, but he bounced into a double play with two runners on his first time up. He avenged that with an opposite-field drive to right.

Traded twice within a week last winter, Napoli blossomed in Texas, prompting Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon to pronounce it "The Year of the Napoli" during the AL playoffs.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the fourth after Pujols hit ? or was hit by pitch, more precisely. The St. Louis star was plunked on the lower left leg to start the inning, Matt Holliday sliced a double and Berkman chopped a two-run single down the first base line.

Players, umpires and techs needed a little time to work out the kinks.

Freese saw Ian Kinsler's leadoff grounder glance off his glove at third base for a single, and stared at the glove that betrayed him. The next inning, Adrian Beltre doubled off Freese's leather.

Third base umpire Ron Kulpa missed his first call in a Series. He ruled Beltre caught Pujols' liner to third when the ball actually bounced in the opening inning.

And there was a glitch when "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery started to sing the national anthem. The microphone didn't work and he got a replacement. The delay came with Michelle Obama and Jill Biden standing on the mound to honor military veterans. The first lady's husband stood in the same place to throw out the first ball at the 2009 All-Star game.
