Army Reviews Controversial Drug After Afghan Massacre

Obviously it's pure speculation, but I have a hard time believing this would mitigate any punishment Bales receives. It would be a nightmare of the most extreme order for the military should Bales be exculpated, even in the most limited sense. The Afghans have been screaming for him to be tried under Afghan law. It would be hard enough to punishment short of the death penalty to the Afghan public, much less an outcome that ends with him in psychiatric care first. This is just one more massive headache in a case that can't be over for the Pentagon fast enough.

In the mean time, expect relations to continue to deteriorate between Afghan security forces and ISAF troops. There is real danger of this review fueling conspiracy theories and sparking further knife-in-the-back attacks on ISAF troops like we've already seen.

It increasingly seems that no one is winning from this war. Afghan civilians have had any sense that westerners provide safety shattered. Westerners trust their Afghan counterparts even less. And yet most of Afghan development depends on the industry that supports the international presence there, which a hasty pull-out would destroy. What's the least bad option here?

Taylor Armstrong and Kim Richards to Be Phased Out of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills?

Camille Grammer is officially out of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Might she soon be joined by a pair of now-former co-stars?

Insiders tell Hollywood Life that Taylor Armstrong and Kim Richards will be phased out of the upcoming season because Bravo wants to make room for a pair of new castmates: Yolanda Hadid and Marisa Zanuck.

Taylor Armstrong and Kim Richards

“Taylor’s appearances on Housewives will be greatly reduced," a source says of Armstrong. "The producers don’t want to concentrate on Taylor anymore. They want a fresh start and new storylines.”

The same apparently applies to Kim, who recently completed a stint in rehab. According to this same mole, Richards' appearances on season tree "will be minimal."

What do you think of this news? Will you miss Taylor? Kim? Or are you looking forward to Armstrong having more opportunities to make money off her husband's death?

Newsies The Musical Reviews | The Disney Blog

A couple of big reviews are in for Newsies The Musical, the Broadway edition. While the crowds may be entertained by the dancing, often to the point of giving multiple standing ovations each night, the critics have less kind about the finer points of the story going as far to call it a collection of tropes from previous musicals.

I?m not sure that?s fair, but it?s a complaint I?ve seen leveled at a lot of musicals recently, so I?m not sure it?s a complaint about Newsies, so much as it is about a general lack of originality on Broadway at the moment.

Ben Brantley in the NY Times says:

Though there is little originality in these dance numbers, they have enough raw vitality to command the attention and even stir the blood. Or they would if they knew when to quit. But just when you think a number is over, it starts up again, and no sooner are you recovering from that one, then there?s another one, with all the same darn back flips, pirouettes, etc. I commend the cast members for always appearing to be excited by what they?re doing. Unfortunately, that is not the same as being exciting.

Jeremy Gerard at Bloomberg can only bring himself to say this (my paragraphing):

?Newsies? gets syrupy faster than I hoped for and while never less than assured, its efforts to earn applause can come mighty close to pandering. Fierstein is a sentimentalist at heart, and the hokiness gets free reign. The songs feel stamped from molds, the music predictable and the words banal.

The Hollywood Reporter, on the other hand, has more praise for Disney?s ability to tap into current trends with an old property:

If this sounds like a rose-colored Occupy Wall Street fantasy, it more or less is, which is no small irony coming from the biggest corporate presence on Broadway. However, Fierstein?s straightforward book is concerned less with tapping into today?s debate about income inequality and worker injustice than with joining the dots of a classic boy-meets-girl-and-tackles-titan tale. Chief among many improvements on the movie is its strengthening of the love story.

Critics do what they are paid to do, critique. You can choose to take it or leave it. Either way, the audience doesn?t mind as the initial run out performed expectations and Disney has added more shows that are already filling up way ahead of time. There?s something to be said about being the hottest ticket on the great white way.

Radioactive Iodine from Fukushima Found in California Kelp

Kelp off southern California was contaminated with short-lived radioisotopes a month after the multiple meltdowns in Japan Kelp forest and sardines, San Clemente Island, Channel Islands, California. Image: Wikimedia Commons/Aquaimages

LONG BEACH, Calif. ? Kelp off Southern California was contaminated with short-lived radioisotopes a month after Japan?s Fukushima accident, a sign that the spilled radiation reached the state?s urban coastline, according to a new scientific study.

Scientists from California State University, Long Beach tested giant kelp collected in the ocean off Orange County and other locations after the March, 2011 accident, and detected radioactive iodine, which was released from the damaged nuclear reactor.

The largest concentration was about 250-fold higher than levels found in kelp before the accident.

?Basically we saw it in all the California kelp blades we sampled,? said Steven Manley, a Cal State Long Beach biology professor who specializes in kelp.

The radioactivity had no known effects on the giant kelp, or on fish and other marine life, and it was undetectable a month later.

Iodine 131 ?has an eight-day half life so it?s pretty much all gone,? Manley said. ?But this shows what happens half a world away does effect what happens here. I don?t think these levels are harmful but it?s better if we don?t have it at all.?

A year ago, Manley watched coverage of the tsunami and Fukushima accident and wondered what impact it might have on California?s marine life, particularly his favorite subject matter ? kelp.

Spread in large, dense, brown forests across the ocean off California, Macrocystis pyrifera, known as giant kelp, is the largest of all algae and grows faster than virtually any other life on Earth. It accumulates iodine so Manley realized it would be a useful dosimeter to check how far radioactive material spreads.

??Kelp forests are some of the most productive ecosystems on Earth,? he said. ?I thought this would be an opportunity because one thing about macrocystis is it has a large surface canopy,? which means it is continually exposed to the air ? and whatever contaminants are in it.

In addition, giant kelp concentrates radioactive iodine 10,000-fold ? for every one molecule in the water there would be 10,000 in its tissues.
Kelp was collected at three sites off Orange County, as well as Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County, Santa Barbara, Pacific Grove and Santa Cruz. The highest concentration of iodine 131 was found in the kelp off Corona del Mar, which receives runoff from a large portion of Orange County. Its kelp was collected on April 15 of last year and tested five days later.

The level of radioactive iodine found there ? 2.5 becquerel per gram of dry weight -- was ?well above? levels sampled in kelps prior to the Fukushima release, according to the paper, published online earlier this month in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

It was about 250 times higher than the concentration found in giant kelp off British Columbia before Fukushima.

When kelp from the same California sites was re-sampled a month later, in May of 2011, it contained no detectable amounts of radioactive iodine.

The scientists estimated that the entire kelp tissue on the surface at Corona del Mar contained about one millicurie.

?In terms of overall exposure to the kelp bed itself, it?s not a huge amount,? said Manley.
It would not have harmed the kelp, a species that grows from northern Baja to southeast Alaska, he said.

Some radioactive material probably accumulated in fish that eat the kelp ? opaleye, halfmoon and senorita.

?If they were feeding on it, they definitely got dosed. We just don?t know if it was harmful. It?s probably not good for them. But no one knows,? Manley said. ?In the marine environment it was significant, but probably not harmful at the levels we detected it, except it may have affected certain fish?s thyroid systems, the ones that fed on the kelp.?

Stanton Peele: The Constitution and Health Insurance

Are there ways in which the Constitution isn't the inerrant guidelight we were taught to think of it as in secondary school? That is, what about airplane security?

But I am thinking specifically about health care. As Glenn Beck so notably argued, "The Constitution doesn't guarantee health care as a fundamental right."

Right. But it has become awfully important to us as Americans and as human beings. And, damn it, they get it as a basic right in other countries! Are they better off than we are because they don't have a Constitution?

Having introduced that question, I'll now leave it for Constitutional scholars to ponder.

But what I'm really thinking about is how we argue the entire heath care debate in terms of personal choices (which may be violated by a mandate to purchase insurance), the rights of businesses and free enterprise (as in, let insurance companies compete to make us the best offers from which to choose our health plans), and a kind of you're-on-your-own, personal freedom philosophy that our founding fathers thought in terms of, but which now seems largely to benefit some very rich and powerful people who control much of all of our lives.

Which leaves us -- where? As a nation, wanting more secure access to our wonderful doctors for ourselves and our children, anxious about how we can afford insurance (or, as seniors, which I am, about how much Medicare covers). Quite understandably, we want more coverage, and to pay no more (please God, maybe even less?) for it.

But personal health care costs continue to rise sharply for everyone, more so than they do in those countries without Constitutions.

As one example of an alternative universe, consider New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman's recent description of health care in Australia and New Zealand: "Conservatives in Australia and New Zealand have also long accepted single-payer national health care systems." Friedman explains:

There are many reasons for the narrowness of the political spectrum here, Johansson added. Neither New Zealand nor Australia are strong churchgoing countries, so social issues don't resonate as much. Both being isolated, sparsely populated, pioneering communities -- New Zealand has only 4.5 million people -- they have strong egalitarian traditions and believe the state has a role to play in making sure everyone gets a fair shake.

"We also have compulsory voting," said Turnbull [Malcolm Turnbull, former leader of Australia's main conservative party]. You get fined if you don't vote. "In a voluntary voting system like yours, there is always the temptation to run hard on hot-button issues that will fire up the base and get them out to vote. In a compulsory voting system, your base has to vote -- as does everyone else -- and so the goal is to target the middle ground."

Wait a second -- doesn't that last bit violate the Constitution?

We're in a sad situation, our American lot, many of us a bad illness or an accident or a denial by an insurance company away from losing our precarious balance in life.

And is this all written in the Constitution?

The "Client Communication" Conversation ? iMediaConnection Blog

We?ve heard it a million times: communication is the key to successful relationships. This doesn?t make it any less true in the agency world. And through the years, Phenomblue has benefitted from a boom in communication tools. From the dominance of email, we?ve added video conferencing,?Skype and?Basecamp to our communication toolbox. This arsenal of tech-related tools allows our Production and Engagement groups to be as accessible and flexible when communicating with clients. And we?re not alone. Agencies and businesses of all types have evolved client communications. Basecamp alone touts more than 5 million users, 4 million projects and 46 million files. Yet at Phenomblue, we don?t hold quantity over quality, especially when it comes to client relationships.

Don?t get me wrong, we use Basecamp daily. Our Producers are in and out of Basecamp all day long, posting messages, checking off milestones, uploading files. But this is coupled with the practice of picking up the phone. You know, actually talking, real-time, voice-to-voice with clients and partners. It?s simply obeying one of the main tenets of advertising: match your medium to your message. And Basecamp (or other software or app based communication tools) aren?t always the right medium. Sometimes it makes the most sense to reach out one-to-one and have a conversation. And it takes people in a relationship to know when to post and when to call.

Relationships have a personal element to them, and for all their strengths, communication tools like Basecamp can?t replace the personal aspect. You wouldn?t date someone you only know through text messages, so why should a client settle for a Producer they only know from Basecamp posts or emails? We don?t think they should. Productive and collaborative communication is more than trading written messages. It?s listening. It?s asking questions. It?s affirming and challenging. And more often than not, conversation is the best way to do all of the above. It?s communicating with our clients because we care not just about what we have to say, but about what they have to contribute. As a whole, client services is a big conversation, and project communication shouldn?t be any different.

After all, there?s a lot to say about agencies that can?t be bothered to talk with their clients.

CM9 source code now available for the HTC Sensation

HTC Sensation

If you're rocking the HTC Sensation (a.k.a. the Pyramid for you geekier types), here's a bit of news that should interest you -- the CyanogenMod team has made the "official" CM9 repos for both the Pyramid and the MSM8660 chipset common files available and open to the public. There's no official release candidate for the Sensation just yet, as there are a few kernel bugs the team wants to iron out before releasing an official CM build, but this means that your favorite ROM developer now has access to what many feel is the cream-of-the-crop in third party Android development -- CM sources.

We've seen ICS builds leak for the the Pyramid, and these no doubt helped push along the development. But if you've been waiting for a Sense-free build of Android 4.0 for your Sensation, the end is in sight. Keep an eye on your favorite developer, and get ready to start flashing.

Tighter security for SAT, ACT in wake of cheating

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) ? Students taking college entrance exams this fall will have to submit photo IDs with their applications ? a key security upgrade following a widespread cheating scandal at a number of high schools on New York's Long Island, a prosecutor and testing officials announced Tuesday.

The security change is one of a number of initiatives following the arrest of 20 current or former high school students accused in a cheating scheme. Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said some of the students were paid as much as $3,500 to stand in for other students on the SAT exam, a key barometer for many colleges determining admissions.

She said 50 students were likely involved in the scheme, but she only had evidence to arrest 20. The prosecution cases against the 20 students are still pending.

Rice complained that security procedures were too lax, and was particularly incensed when she learned that one male student allegedly stood in for a female on one occasion. She said students have easy access to phony identification cards, making it difficult for administrators at testing sites to determine if a student is actually who he or she claims to be.

"These reforms close a gaping hole in standardized test security that allowed students to cheat and steal admissions offers and scholarship money from kids who play by the rules," Rice said.

During the 2010-11 school year, the SAT was administered to nearly three million students worldwide; 1.6 million students took the ACT in 2011.

The new testing requirements include making students upload a photograph of themselves when they register for the SAT or ACT. Those unable to upload a photo will be permitted to mail in a photo, which will be scanned by the testing agency.

Then, an admission ticket into the testing site, containing the scanned photo, will be mailed to the student.

The photo will not only be printed on the admission ticket, but on the test site roster, and can be checked against the photo ID a student provides at the test center. That photo will be attached to students' scores as they are reported to high schools and colleges.

Other changes include checking student IDs more frequently at test centers; IDs will be checked when students enter a test site, and whenever they re-enter the test room after breaks, and again when the answer sheets are collected.

Testing companies also may conduct "spot checks" with enhanced security at random test locations, or where cheating is suspected. Proctors also will receive additional training to help them identify cheaters and high school and college officials will receive more information about reporting suspected cheating to testing companies.

A spokesman for The College Board noted that some of the security enhancements were developed in consultation with a security firm run by former FBI director Louis Freeh.

Celebrating my Sheros: Dr. Mae Jemison

If you happened to read my Celebrating Ada Lovelace Day post from October 7, 2011, then you may have gleaned that I have this awesome fangirl obsession with THE Dr. Mae Jemison. As a young girl, I remember her being a member of the Space Shuttle Team, Endeavor, which launched in 1992. She was the very first African-American woman to travel in space; and she was an inspiration to young people everywhere?especially this girl.

Seeing a role model that resembled me, meant a lot to me.? I think it means a lot to most young people. I especially love how, this physician-turned-astronaut was rocking a super chick natural in her official NASA photos.? Fierce!

Dr. Jemison even appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation. How awesome is that?

I had a rare chance to hear her speak (and later meet her) in person. It was a most spectacular day for me.

Originally posted as Making Science Make Sense with Dr. Mae Jemison at Urban Science Adventures! ?.

On Wednesday, September 8, 2010, THE Dr. Mae Jemison spoke a room of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educators and advocates at the state of Missouri STEM Summit presented by the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education.

As I listened to her keynote talk: ?Diversity in STEM: The New American Imperative?, I fought hard, very hard, to control myself.? I was not only super excited about seeing her in person, but was so moved by her words.? She discussed shy science literacy matters for everyone, EVERYONE, and why bringing more women and under-represented minorities into STEM career tracks is critical to our nation?s success.? As she put it, training ALL of our students in STEM prepares them to take jobs in innovation; or alternatively for those that do not wish to become scientists or engineers, we want them?to be ready to understand and use new technologies and make decisions about science and tech policy or personal matters is important.

I really felt like she was reading my mind and sharing those thoughts with the world, especially when she remarked, ?What was best about my education in science is that?it gave me the ability to think critically and be flexible.?? That?s the heart of why science literacy matters.? It prepares individuals to make the best decisions possible for themselves and their families.

She then got to the heart of the talk for this audience of formal and informal STEM educators and advocates ? How STEM is taught and learned. I sat down in front directly facing Dr. Jemison, meeting her eye every time she look up.? And her words rang so true to me that the remainder of this post I?m using first person voice because everything she was saying, I?have said, and I feel as passionately as she. And if you can imagine, I was bursting inside ready to stand up and testify; but vigorous head nodding was all I allowed myself to do in that professional setting.

Point #1 ? Kids love science. They have this innate curiosity to learn about the word, to tinker, to figure things out.? The rote memorization of fact has bored the love of science and engineering out of most kids. ?We have got to figure out how to use the prodigious construct for learning and keep them engaged in science past the exploratory/curiosity in science.? Rote memorization is not the way to get to improved STEM access to all students. Hands-on inquiry-based learning is a fancy name for kids doing science.?? Science is a VERB, it?s what I do.? (That last sentence is me).

Point #2 ? STEM cuts across all fields. Reading, writing, arithmetic. Students learn all kinds of subject matter via science and science can be used to reinforce other subject matters.? It is an applied way to utilize these skills.? For examples, students read about experiments, take measurements, and summarize and present results.

Point #3. Everyone should be on board to improve STEM access and literacy.? Industry is?very is important but we should run schools like businesses, but because industry gives us the feedback we need to help students prepare for these great careers in STEM.

Point #4 -?Just putting a kid in front a computer is NOT science literacy. ?Giving a child a chance to grow a potato in a cup is better science education than all of that fancy technology equipment!!? Preach, preach it.

Point #5 ? What?s best for all students to do well in science that they have to have Exposure, Experiences, and Expectation ? whether they become professional scientists/engineers or not. (And by now I was ready to jump up and shout).? A majority of career opportunities in science and engineering do NOT require a 4 year degree. As adults, we have?got to?do better job as guidance counselors or as parents or mentors.? We?ve got to?help them know what their options are and make sure they are adequately prepared for them.

Exposure: Students must exposed to what scientists and engineers do.? This helps them?know the variety?of career possibilities available to them.

Experiences: One really needs some hands-on experiences to gain confidence in a subject. Try it out, then you?ll know if you?re good at it, want to do it, etc.? And confidence aligns with better performance in a subject.? Don?t think so? But some studies?have found that girls do as well or better than boys in math & science until the end of high school.? By then they are given the message that aren?t as good as boys in this subject and coincidentally, they begin to perform poorly. For some reason, girls are given messages that make them feel less confident in their abilities in science and engineering, even when they do very well in these subjects.? Experience is the key to build confidence and better performance in STEM for all students.

Expectation: Expectation is predictive. Youth & Adults live up or down expectations. Pay attention to the words you say and the tone you set before all children, teens and adults.? Think back to the example of girls and math.

At the end of her talk, I was the great science stalker that I am.? I managed to get not only a picture with her (even as her handler was trying to shuttle her out), but I hugged her, too.? I had to, I just had to.? I was ready to tackle the handler.? I was like, ?Lady, do you not know how momentous this moment is for me right now?? I?m??seeing one of my role models ? in the flesh, before my eyes. I?m ready to body-check for the chance to meet this woman!?? But it was all good.? Both Dr. Jemison and her handler were really sweet and accommodating and allowed some very quick group pictures before whisking her away to catch a flight out of Kansas City.

Dr. Jemison is involved with science outreach and STEM diversity through two great programs: International Science Camp ? The Earth We Share and?Making Science Make Sense. Check them both out for more information.

Ask Engadget: using an iPad as a remote viewfinder?

Image
We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from is from William who is looking for an solution to the problem of badly designed public spaces. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"Hi guys. I'm getting married in a church with a weird split-hall design. The result is that half of the attendees won't be able to see the ceremony at all! I'm wondering if I could hook up my Canon Rebel T3i up to my 3rd-generation iPad and use it as a quick-and-dirty closed-circuit display? There's no WiFi in the location, so it has to be a wired solution too. Please help me!"

It's an interesting request and that's why we're here: solving those problems that three minutes on Google just can't. So, dear friends, what say you? Wish the soon-to-be-wed couple all the best by adding a helpful solution to the comment feed and spread a little joy.
