Johnson cruises to 3rd win in NASCAR All-Star race

(AP) ? Jimmie Johnson used a calculated strategy Saturday night to win NASCAR's All-Star race and its $1 million prize for the third time in his career.

The five-time champion won the first 20-lap segment of the Sprint All-Star race, then rode around at the back of the field for the next 60 laps around Charlotte Motor Speedway. His plan was to stay out of trouble, and make his play for the win in the fifth and final segment.

The new format this year set it up so that the winners of the first four segments would be the first four drivers down pit road for a mandatory stop before the 10-lap sprint to the finish. Johnson's win in the first segment meant he was guaranteed to be the first driver down pit road, and he had the first stall ? the reward for his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team winning Thursday night's Pit Crew Competition.

The race was then just to beat everyone else off pit road, and Johnson did by edging Matt Kenseth across the line.

He then had a great restart, and pulled away to become just the third driver ? joining Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon ? to win three All-Star races. Johnson's other wins were in 2003 and 2006.

This win comes a week after his Darlington Raceway victory gave Hendrick Motorsports its 200th Cup win, and he celebrated by picking up team owner Rick Hendrick, who climbed halfway through the window of the Chevrolet for Johnson's celebratory lap.

"He said come pick me up, and once I got to him, he didn't want the ride," Johnson said. "I'm like, 'No, no, I came to get you, Get on the car.' It was great to take him around."

Brad Keselowski, winner of the third segment, had no chance to catch Johnson over the closing 10 laps.

"It's all about the restart," Keselowski said. "The high line on the restart just wouldn't go. I don't know if I would have been able to do anything, but I would have liked another shot. We got beat by a five-time champ and two-time All-Star winner, so I think we're doing pretty good. We didn't have enough to pull it off."

Kenseth, winner of the second segment, finished third and was followed by Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won the fourth segment and advanced into the All-Star race by winning the qualifying race earlier Saturday night.

Chicago: Cops, Obama office were terror targets

Chicago Police Department via AP

Jared Chase (left), Brian Church (center) and Brent Vincent Betterly were charged Saturday with plotting terrorist acts.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Updated at 4 p.m. ET?CHICAGO -- Three anti-NATO protesters charged with terrorism conspiracy planned to attack four Chicago police stations, the local campaign headquarters for President Barack Obama and the home of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, prosecutors alleged in court Saturday.

While friends of the?three men insisted they were just operating a home brewery, prosecutors stated that police found a gun that fires mortar rounds, swords, a hunting bow, ninja-like throwing stars and knives with brass knuckle handles.

?The?beer-brewing operation, prosecutors added, was used to fill bottles with gasoline that would later be thrown as Molotov cocktails.

"Plans were made to destroy police cars and attack four CPD stations with destructive devices, in an effort to undermine the police response" to attacks on the Obama office, the Emanuel home as well as unspecified financial institutions during the NATO summit this weekend, the charging statement said.

The men were identified as 22-year-old Brian Church, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 27-year-old Jared Chase, of Keene, N.H.; and 24-year-old Brent?Betterly, who told police he resides in Massachusetts.?

The three are "self-proclaimed anarchists, and members of the 'Black Bloc' group," prosecutors said, without elaborating.

Michael Deutsch, an attorney for the men, denied that and said the men and their friends were in Chicago to "peaceably protest."

The three were charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism, possession of an explosive or incendiary device and providing material support for terrorism.?Bond of $1.5 million was set for each defendant.?

Defense attorneys told a judge on Saturday that undercover police were the ones who brought the Molotov cocktails, and that their clients were entrapped.

?

Deutsch later told reporters outside the courtroom that, though he was just getting into the case and didn't know all the evidence, he believed it was a setup. At least two informants "ingratiated themselves" with the three men, brought the materials and made the alleged plans, he insisted, calling it "an entrapment to the highest degree."

But?Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters "the evidence speaks for itself" about what he called an "imminent threat."

Cook County State?s Attorney Anita Alvarez?said the investigation began weeks ago and local authorities had the help of the FBI and the Secret Service.

"They are not peaceful protesters, they are domestic terrorists ... these men were here to hurt people," Alvarez said.?"They were making the bombs ... (and had) directions on how to implement this."

Read the full charging document

The charging document states that "while the Molotov Cocktails were being poured, Church discussed the NATO Summit, the protests, and how the Molotov Cocktails would be used ... At one point, Church asked if others had ever seen a 'cop on fire' and discussed throwing one of the Molotov Cocktails into" a police station.

"Church stated that he also wanted to buy several assault rifles, and indicated that if a police officer was going to point a gun at him, then Church would be 'pointing one back'," the document states.

Six others initially arrested were released Friday.?They were all detained in a raid Wednesday on?a home in Bridgeport on Chicago's South Side,?NBCChicago.com reported.

Overall, 14 people have been arrested in the lead up to the summit, McCarthy said. When asked if more arrests were expected, he said he was "not positive," though he noted the investigation was ongoing.?

But the group of protesters said what police thought was suspicious was actually a home beer-brewing operation.

"We were handcuffed to a bench and our legs were shackled together. We were not told what was happening," one of those detained but later released, Darrin Ammussek, told NBCChicago.com. "I believe very strongly in non-violence, and if I had seen anything that even resembled any plans or anything like that, we wouldn?t have been there."

Scenes from Chicago protests surrounding NATO summit

He claimed that during 18 hours in custody, police never told him why he was arrested, read him his rights or allowed him to make a phone call, The Associated Press reported. He said he remained handcuffed to a bench, even after asking to use a restroom.?

"There were guards walking by making statements into the door along the lines of 'hippie,' 'communist,' 'pinko,'" a tired-looking Ammussek told reporters just after his release.?

Security has been high throughout the city in preparation for the summit, where delegations from about 60 countries, including 50 heads of state, will discuss the war in Afghanistan and European missile defense.?

US veterans to return war medals in protest

Among the pre-NATO protests was a march on the home of Mayor?Emanuel by about 500 people on Saturday. The big show will be on Sunday, the start of the two-day NATO summit, when thousands of protesters are expected to march 2? miles from a band shell on Lake Michigan to the McCormick Place convention center, where delegates will be meeting.?

Tactics School Districts Use to Prevent Parents From Winning Special

Are you th? parent ?f a child w?th autism ?r a learning disability receiving special education services? Are y?u new to the special education arena and w?uld l?k? t? be educated on ?ome tactics to l?ok for? This article w?ll be discussing 8 tactics used by ?om? special education personnel, t? prevent parents from be?ng equal participants ?n th?ir child's education.

Tactic 1: Intimidation, bullying and lying! Some special education personnel tr? very hard to b? intimidating, s? that parents will not fight f?r services for th?ir children! Intimidation could b? loud voices, threats, condescending t? the parent, ?r making the parent feel inadequate ?r uncomfortable!

Tactic 2: All of the above; but w?th a smile on th??r face! It absolutely gets m? wh?n ? special education person opens th?ir mouth and states s?m?th?ng n?t truthful, when th?y are smiling! I wond?r if th?y th?nk that the lie w?ll not be realized by th? parent, due to their facial expressions

Tactic 3: Quoting laws that do not exist, to make ?t s?em l?k? th?y have more power th?n they do! As an educational advocate ?nd parent I have ?een this m?n? times myself. Example: Mrs. Jones th? law all?w? u? t? n?t give services t? children if we run out of money (not true)! Or Mrs. Jones the law s??? that we c?n suspend ?our child for as long a? we w?nt t? due t? the?r behavior (not true)!

Tactic 4: I hav? heard from m?ny parents th?t th?ir special education personnel have actu?ll? changed educational records ?o th?t the? could win a dispute with th? parent! What I have ???n is records added to a child's file (that the parent did n?t know about) to document things that h?v? happened. This ?s why it ?s critical th?t parents g?t copies of th?ir child's entire educational record (especially during ? dispute) ?nd k?e? it f?r future reference. If ??u end up ?n due process with y?ur school district check all records th?t they ?r? us?ng t? make sure th?t they match the records th?t y?u have!

Tactic 5: Refusing to identify, ?nd accept disabilities in ? child that make th?m eligible f?r special education services. Many parents must get independent evaluations (at th??r ?wn expense) to prove that their child actually h?? ? disability, and is eligible for special education services!

Tactic 6: Misinterpreting test data t? show th?t th? child do?s n?t ne?d special education services! I hav? heard many special education personnel state th?t the? d? n?t bel?eve low test scores and that th? child does n?t need services be?aus? of th?ir low test scores. This ?? untrue; wh?n?ver a standardized test shows th?t the child i? b?l?w their age and grade ?p?ro?r??te peers in an area, the child ?hould receive special education services ?o th?t the? ?an make progress ?n their education.

Tactic 7: Use delay ?r deny tactics. A lot ?f special education personnel tr? and delay the parents request for special education ?nd related services. They may ignore parents request for testing for eligibility, ?r ?u?t us? ?n? tactic av?il?ble t? delay the request! When delay n? longer works many personnel ?u?t ??? no; which is of course is denial! Stand u? t? thes? tactics b? documenting ?ll requests ?n writing!

Tactic 8 (this ha?p?ns to be my favorite): Exaggerate ?r make up discipline problems s? that they can change the child's label ?r placement! Some school districts w?nt t? put Emotionally Disordered ?r Behaviorally Disordered labels ?n children ?? that th?y ?an put them ?n alternative placements, and deny needed special education services.

State's focus on early learning garners grant, boosts goals ...

THE notion that investing in quality child care and early learning now saves precious education dollars down the road has kept Washington lawmakers protective of the Department of Early Learning, even in tough budget times.

The state?s commitment to early learning has garnered a $60 million Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge grant. The money will pay for professional development for child-care providers and to improve early-childhood education.

So it is no surprise that Washington is ranked No. 2 in the nation for quality and safety by a national child-care advocacy group.

The National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies? ranking affirms we are on the right track. Its rankings are based on how states oversee small child-care businesses ? largely in-home child-care facilities. Additional confirmation comes from another report, this one by the National Institute for Early Education Research at Rutgers University, ranking Washington No. 7 in per-pupil spending on state-funded preschools.

A look at the competition nationally is a reminder that while Washington rightly struggles to do more, other states are still doing only the bare minimum to ensure early-learning opportunities for young children. Washington is one of just nine states requiring fingerprinting and a check against the sex-offender registry. A whopping 16 states do not regulate family home child-care providers at all. Yikes.

Studies show young learners who did not have early learning tended to have higher absentee rates and academic trouble in the early grades. The challenge for Washington is to ensure access to high-quality educational programs for all kids.

Goals for Washington include creating quality standards, curriculum appropriate for young minds, minimum provider-training requirements and a quality ratings method that will help parents shopping for early-learning programs.

Efforts and investment will create a coherent and robust system of early-childhood education aligned with our K-12 system.

Daily Chronicle | Cullerton champions online gambling

SPRINGFIELD ? Illinois should move quickly to establish itself as an international leader in online poker and other types of Internet gambling, state Senate President John Cullerton said Tuesday, claiming the payoff could amount to hundreds of millions of dollars.

The Chicago Democrat is introducing legislation that would create a Division of Internet Gaming within the state lottery. Under his proposal, that division would make Illinois the first state to jump into the world of online gambling. Illinois is already the first to sell lottery tickets online.

?The state could organize the first major poker pool, garner worldwide popularity, and position itself as a ?hub? for multi-state and international iGaming,? Cullerton said in a letter to the governor and other legislative leaders.

Cullerton said it is imperative for Illinois to act this spring before other states take the lead.

But others urged caution.

?We should not rush to vote on this proposal, blinded by some dollar signs,? said Patty Schuh, spokeswoman for Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont. ?This is a massive expansion of gambling that deserves serious consideration.?

The U.S. Justice Department says states can offer Internet gambling so long as it doesn?t involve betting on sports teams. The ruling allowed Illinois to sell lottery tickets online, but it also opened the door to much broader gambling options.

Cullerton?s proposal would allow online gambling by anyone who is 21 or older and physically in the state of Illinois. It would also let people set maximum amounts of time and money they could spend gambling.

Sen. Terry Link, D-Waukegan, chairs the Senate Gaming Committee and is a frequent advocate of expanding gambling in Illinois. He praised Cullerton?s proposal as having ?unlimited potential? and said it would not cut into business at Illinois casinos.

Millions of people are already gambling online, Link said, so there?s no reason Illinois shouldn?t get some of that money. And if Illinois acts quickly, it could establish itself before other states jump in.

?It?s better to be first than to be last,? Link said.

FTC: Skechers deceived consumers with shoe ads

(AP) ? The government wants you to know that simply sporting a pair of Skechers' fitness shoes is not going to get you Kim Kardashian's curves or Brooke Burke's toned tush.

Skechers USA Inc. will pay $40 million to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission that the footwear company made unfounded claims that its Shape-ups shoes would help people lose weight and strengthen their butt, leg and stomach muscles. Kardashian, Burke and other celebrities endorsed the shoes in Skechers ads.

Wednesday's settlement also involves the company's Resistance Runner, Toners, and Tone-ups shoes and claims of deceptive advertising for those shoes as well.

Consumers who bought the shoes would be eligible for refunds, though it's not clear how much money they'll get. The FTC says that will depend on how many claims are received in the eight-month filing period. Buyers can go to the FTC website to file a claim.

Most of the $40 million federal settlement would be returned to consumers, but a small amount of the settlement would be used to administer the payouts.

The settlement is related to a broader agreement also announced Wednesday that resolves a multi-state investigation led by the attorneys general from Tennessee and Ohio and involving more than 40 states. The company will provide an additional $5 million to the states, and pay $5 million in class-action attorney fees.

"The FTC's message, for Skechers and other national advertisers, is to shape up your substantiation or tone down your claims," said David Vladeck, director of the agency's consumer protection bureau. For millions of consumers, he said, "the only thing that got a workout was their wallet."

The commission settled similar charges with Reebok last year over its EasyTone walking shoes and RunTone running shoes. That $25 million agreement also provided customer refunds.

Skechers denied the allegations but said it settled to avoid long litigation.

"Skechers could not ignore the exorbitant cost and endless distraction of several years spent defending multiple lawsuits in multiple courts across the country," said David Weinberg, the company's chief financial officer. "While we believe we could have prevailed in each of these cases, to do so would have imposed an unreasonable burden on the company."

The company, based in Manhattan Beach, Calif., said it has received overwhelmingly enthusiastic feedback about the shoes from thousands of customers.

Skechers billed its Shape-ups as a fitness tool designed to promote weight loss and tone muscles with the shoe's curved "rocker" or rolling bottom ? saying it provides natural instability and causes the consumer to "use more energy with every step." Shape-ups cost about $100 and are sold at retailers nationwide.

Ads for the Resistance Runner shoes claimed people who wear them could increase "muscle activation" by up to 85 percent for posture-related muscles and 71 percent for one of the muscles in the buttocks, said the FTC.

The commission says Skechers falsely represented that clinical studies backed up the company's claims about its toning shoes. The FTC's Vladeck said the studies had defects, such as one that said people lost weight wearing the toning shoes, when in fact they gained weight.

The settlement bars Skechers from misrepresenting any tests, studies or research on its shoes in the future.

(AP Photo/Florida Today,Tim Shortt) NO SALES, MAGS OUT

(AP) ? In the middle of the night, Tonya Thomas' neighbors awoke to the sound of a gunshot and moments later heard a knock on their door.

Three of Thomas' four children were outside, including one who appeared to have been shot. Before the neighbors could offer help, Thomas came out of her house and called the children back home.

They complied. The neighbors dialed 911 after hearing more gunshots.

Brevard County Sheriff's deputies found Thomas, 33, dead of an apparent self-inflicted wound and three of her children ? Jaxs Johnson, 15; Jazzlyn Johnson, 13; and Joel Johnson, 12 ? were fatally shot inside the house. A fourth child, Pebbles Johnson, 17, was found shot to death in the front yard of a neighbor's house.

Investigators said they didn't know a motive for the shooting and weren't sure why the children followed their mother's orders to return to the house.

"From what the neighbors said, she was very calm. She walked out and called them back. They turned around and walked back to the house," said sheriff's spokesman Lt. Tod Goodyear.

Another neighbor told deputies Thomas sent a text message in the middle of the night saying she wanted to be cremated with her children.

"He didn't see the text until he woke up this morning," Goodyear said.

The shooting happened in Port St. John, about 15 miles west of Cape Canaveral in an area known as the "Space Coast" because it is the home of NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the location of numerous shuttle launches.

Authorities went to Thomas' house on three successive days last month, according to dispatch records released Tuesday.

In the first visit, on Easter Sunday, Thomas reported that her son had thrown a bicycle through a window at the house. The next day, she called to report that her son had kicked and punched her when she tried to wake him up for school.

The following day, child welfare investigators visited the house to look into allegations of inadequate supervision of the children.

The Department of Children and Families was following up on a report on a Johnson child who had been released from a detention facility and hadn't been picked up by a caretaker, DCF spokeswoman Carrie Hoeppner said in an email.

Records showed Thomas was arrested in 2002 on a misdemeanor battery charge for striking Joe Johnson, the father of her children. The charge was later dropped. Two years earlier, she filed a domestic violence complaint against Joe Johnson, but that was dismissed after a hearing.

Jamie Hudson, whose mother lives two doors down from the family, said the boys in the family were known to shoot BBs at a home across the street and had threatened to set it on fire.

"It has been an ongoing problem on our street with them," Hudson said.

Goodyear said Jaxs Johnson had recently been arrested on a domestic violence charge. He said he didn't know if the boy had been accused of hitting his mother or causing damage at the house.

Austin Lewis, a 16-year-old classmate of Pebbles Johnson, said the family "had problems like everybody else but nothing that drastic."

He described Pebbles Johnson as "very loving and caring."

"Always with a smile," Lewis said. "Didn't let anything affect her. She was always in a good mood."

A pastor at the church the family attended described it as "normal stuff."

"I think he was punching some walls or something," said Jarvis Wash, pastor of the Real Church in Rockledge, Fla.

Wash said the family attended services last Sunday but had been absent for a few weeks before that.

"I don't know what could have happened in the past couple of days," Wash said. "It's a tragedy to the church and the community."

How Do I Lose Weight Fast ... - Subliminal Self Hypnosis

By Houstan Vlark ?http://subliminalselfhypnosis.com/pblog/how-do-i-lose-weight-fast/

People often ask themselves how do I lose weight on a regular basis. Oftentimes, the same people have tried various types of routines with little to no success, with some growing more frustrated with each attempt. Even though this type of journey can be frustrating, tiresome and confusing, it may help to consider some things, which could help you in the end.

Being able to get back into shape can depend on several different factors, in most cases. For instance, it can be highly important to make smart and healthy eating choices. Regardless if you workout several hours a week, you?re not likely to see results that are as effective as you would be eating properly.

The type of exercise that you do and how often you do it may play a major role in your overall success. Therefore, it?s key to choose something that works right for you, rather than doing what you think is popular at the time.

People often become tired of the same routines. This is sometimes because most take on whatever may be the trend at that moment, even if they generally don?t appreciate that type of workout normally. In order to ensure a routine you can stick to, try to get into activities that you enjoy.

These days, there are various routines or activities that you can do. This might include traditional aerobics, dance classes or DVDs, swimming, sports, among other things as well. Also, don?t hesitate to vary what you do. This will help to keep your body challenged, which will keep it working harder.

Speaking to a professional who specialized in the world of fitness can often be beneficial, and they may be able to point you in the right direction, so that you can answer the question to the common question of how do I lose weight fast. This could be anyone from a nutritionist or dietician, down to a fitness expert or health-conscious life coach.

Enterprise, Video Led The $25.1B In M&A Deals Last Quarter, Ernst & Young Says

Screen Shot 2012-05-14 at 3.23.36 PMInstagram, Schminstagram. While flashy consumer deals keep getting all the headlines, it was actually cloud computing, enterprise and video that fueled the biggest deals of last quarter's $25.1 billion in mergers and acquisitions,?according to top-tier accounting firm Ernst & Young. The total value of all deals fell by 12 percent from the year before while the number of deals was about the same. While that's not too huge a drop, the firm attributes it to "ongoing economic uncertainty." (Thanks Greece.)?Quarterly deal volume has apparently reached a?plateau after two years of growth and is being restrained by concerns about the macroeconomic climate. If you're curious what the biggest deals of last quarter were, here are they below.

Android Central international round-up - May 12, 2012

Android Central

While this past week or so has dominated by CTIA in the U.S, the international focus remained on Samsung's latest bag of tricks, the Galaxy S III. European networks announced pricing and release plans, as we cross off the days until the May 29 launch. We've also seen the first Galaxy S III variant emerge, in the form of a new mid-range device for Korea Telecom.

But it hasn't been all Galaxy S III -- LG announced the Optimus LTE 2, and released the Optimus L7 in the UK. And we also got a release date for the European RAZR MAXX. Meanwhile, Sony announced two sleek new Android 4.0 phones for the Japanese market -- the Xperia GX (Hayabusa) and Xperia SX (Mint). We're eager to see these arrive on international shores, but right now Sony's made no announcements to this effect.

And Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates continue to roll out. This week the international version of the Samsung Galaxy Note got its bump up to ICS, bringing performance improvements, some visual tweaks and new S Memo functionality to Sammy's 5.3-incher.

There was also good news for anyone on a European network who likes to travel within Europe -- the EU has voted to impose a price cap on calls and data roaming prices, meaning more reasonable roaming bills if you're travelling within Europe this summer.

Check the list below for a quick run-down of the main international Android developments in the past week or so. If you've got international news, be sure to tip us at the usual address.

Howard Stern Calls Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez 'Dummies'

Britney will be 'train wreck' on 'X Factor,' new 'America's Got Talent' judge adds at press conference.
By James Montgomery

Howard Stern held court at New York's Friars Club on Thursday in a long-running press conference to promote his upcoming stint as a judge on "America's Got Talent." And in keeping with the spirit of the legendary roasts that take place at the venue, he didn't shy away from taking some shots at his singing-competition contemporaries.

Stern was asked by a reporter whether he would have signed up for the "Talent" gig if it meant serving on a panel with "American Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez and newly-announced "X Factor" judge Britney Spears — as opposed to the "Talent" tandem of Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne — and, well, let's just say he answered rather directly.

"No, I would not [have], because I think we have the best judging panel out there, out of all these shows. I think that the judges all offer constructive, precise criticism, and I really like it," Stern said. "To sit there with J.Lo and Britney Spears and try to prop those two up, I'd be like a ventriloquist with two dummies; I'm not going to sit there and do that."

Stern didn't stop there, either. When he was asked for his thoughts on "The X Factor" 's reported $15 million deal with Spears, the shock jock joked that he was in favor of it ... for slightly dubious reasons, of course.

"I think it's a wonderful decision; Britney still thinks the world is flat. We're going to tune in to see if she can sort of function through the thing. As far as any real criticism, I think ["X Factor" judges] Simon [Cowell] and L.A. Reid will be doing that," he said. "I think Britney's going to stand there and eat a lollipop and wear a sexy outfit; I don't anticipate great opinions from her. I think she's going to sit there like J.Lo. 'Oh, you're wonderful, you're terrific. You think I could get a perfume endorsement out of this? You think I can perform on the show?' I think that's what it's about, but I think it will be interesting. ... I'll tune in to see what kind of train wreck she is, absolutely."

Mariah Carey Celebrates Obama Announcement at Gay Nightclub

It's safe to say that Mariah Carey and Bristol Palin reacted very differently to Barack Obama announcing his support of gay marriage this week.

But while the daughter of a failed Vice Presidential candidate went public with wayward insults of Obama as a father, Glee and Dora the Explorer, Mariah simply went out and partied!

Mariah Carey and B. Scott

Witnesses say Carey showed up at The Abbey Food and Bar in West Hollywood on Wednesday night, dancing the evening away at the gay nightclub with pal B. Scott.

"She was very nice and gracious," an onlooker at the establishment tells People, adding that the deejay recognized her after awhile and started to play some Mariah classics.

At this, the ladies simply went "crazy" on the dance floor.

Sort of like how Bristol went at Obama's announcement, only not at all.

HP EliteBook 8460p

It starts with the lid latch. Where other business laptops offer a small, flimsy latch or, worse, make you scrabble with your fingernails at a nonexistent one, the HP EliteBook 8460p ($1,239 direct) has a big, burnished button that unlocks the securely latched lid. It's the first of your daily exposures to the 8460p's solid construction and classy design.

We don't say "solid construction" lightly?like other EliteBooks, the 8460p is a business-rugged system, built to withstand military tests for shock, vibration, dust, and heat. It's not as invulnerable as fully rugged systems such as the Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 ($4,843 street, 3.5 stars) or Dell Latitude E6420 XFR ($5,612 direct, 3.5 stars), but it's built to shrug off the scuffs and bumps of travel?along with inadvertent liquid spills, thanks to a spill-resistant keyboard and drain hole in the bottom.

Against that, its sturdy construction makes the 8460p a bit bulkier and heavier than other 14-inch laptops such as the Lenovo IdeaPad U400 ($899.99 direct, 4 stars) and Dell XPS 14z ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), and it lacks a couple of up-to-date features such as Intel Wireless Display (WiDi). But it's still a handsome, helpful business companion.

Design
Compared to the basic black of, say, Lenovo ThinkPads, the EliteBook 8460p is a stylish platinum-silver slab measuring 1.3 by 13.3 by 9.1 inches (HWD) and weighing 5.4 pounds, with an aluminum lid, palm rest, and encircling strip that contains the ports on a black magnesium alloy base. A DisplaySafe rubber frame protects the screen, which has a tiny LED next to the webcam to illuminate the non-backlit keyboard (well, part of the keyboard) in shadowy situations.

The matte-finish 14.0-inch display offers 1,366 by 768 resolution. Though not the brightest or highest in contrast that we've seen, it delivered good detail and color. Audio from the HP's twin speakers?both mounted left of center, one on the front edge and one on the bottom?was loud enough to fill a conference room, but sounded flat.

The slightly concave, island-style keys of the 8460p's keyboard provide a nicely firm typing feel. Except for HP's bizarre keyboard trademark?small up and down arrows sandwiched between full-sized left and right arrows?the layout is fine, with dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys and three buttons at top right that toggle Wi-Fi, audio mute, and browser launch. The last, when the computer is switched off, opens HP QuickWeb, which satisfies impatient surfers and e-mail checkers by bringing up a Web browser plus widgets such as weather and news headlines without booting Windows.

The glass-topped touchpad is first-rate, with smooth cursor motion, tapping, and gesture control and not-too-stiff, not-too-noisy mouse buttons below?and above, with the latter pair of buttons belonging to the pointing stick located at the intersection of the G, H, and B keys. The concave pointing stick isn't quite as successful as the touchpad (or Lenovo's TrackPoints), but should please users who want a choice of pointing devices.

Features
An old-school 56Kbps modem, along with VGA and Ethernet ports, decorates the EliteBook's back edge. On the right side of the chassis are microphone and headphone jacks, two USB 2.0 ports?one an eSATA/USB combo port, the other able to charge handheld devices?and a DisplayPort and Smart Card slot. On the left are two USB 3.0 ports, a FireWire port, SD/MMC and ExpressCard slots, and the DVD?RW drive.

A docking connector on the bottom completes the hardware connectivity roster, which lacks only HDMI. Similarly, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth check two of three boxes on the wireless shopping list, with Wireless Display, as mentioned, absent. With neither HDMI nor WiDi available, business travelers planning a big presentation with the 8460p had better rely on a VGA projector rather than an HDTV set.

IT managers will like the 8460p's Core i5 vPro processor and TPM security chip, but small and medium as well as large enterprises can benefit from the best part of the 320GB (7,200 rpm) hard drive's software preload: HP ProtectTools, a suite of utilities that steer you through security functions ranging from managing passwords to encrypting data and sanitizing (securely deleting) files. Other software found alongside Windows 7 Professional includes HP Power Assistant for managing power profiles, Microsoft Office 2010 Starter, and a 60-day Norton Internet Security trial. HP stands behind the EliteBook with a three-year limited parts and labor warranty.

Performance
HP EliteBook 8460p The EliteBook 8460p features a 2.5GHz Core i5-2520M processor and 4GB of RAM. The combination won't set any speed records, but makes the HP a peppy performer for the productivity work for which it's designed.

HP EliteBook 8460p

Its PCMark 7 score of 2,065 is 200 to 300 points shy of slugging it out with the likes of the Lenovo U400 and Gateway ID47H07u, but its Handbrake video encoding and Photoshop CS5 image editing times of 1 minute 46 seconds and 3:56, respectively, are extremely competitive with other Core i5-based, 14-inch laptops, though they trail the Core i7-equipped Dell XPS 14z (1:37 and 3:27, respectively).

And though we'd be the last to suggest that a busy business traveler waste her time playing games, we must note that the Radeon HD 6470M graphics powered the HP to playable frame rates at 1,024 by 768 resolution in Crysis (38.3 fps) and Lost Planet 2 (31.3 fps). Our biggest disappointment in benchmark testing was that the 8460p balked at our MobileMark 2007 battery rundown test, obliging us to fall back on our DVD simulation test of looping a two-hour MP4 video from the system's hard disk. The HP's removable 62Wh battery lasted 5 hours and 1 minute with screen brightness set at 50 percent.

Compared with the Editors' Choice pair of the Acer TravelMate 8481T-6440A and Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5), the HP EliteBook 8460p is a little heavy and short on battery life. But even with the extra weight of its semi-rugged construction and the lack of those laptops' HDMI and WiDi, the EliteBook 8460p is a first-class business laptop. It's attractive, with a great typing and touchpadding experience, and built with security in mind.

Unfortunatly the time has come for this scraper to come down (seemingly it may come as a shock to some that this is not provided by the BBC). I wrote this back in 2005 and have modified it a couple of times since mainly so that I could more easily consume RSS on the move. In short, I no longer use it, I find consuming live news is not actually something an RSS reader does very well and I face a constant battle against sites trying to use these feeds to monetize BBC content and failing to pay any attention to etag or last modified headers (hello palin-pedia.com et al). Please update your RSS subscription as the last remenants of this will be removed soon , the official BBC RSS feed you are looking for is: http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/front_page/rss.xml
