Merrill 4 Marketing U: What Real Estate Agents Need to Know About ...

If you have a Facebook page then you have probably noticed that your page looks drastically different recently. One thing Facebook has always had in common with life is that is that it never stops changing, but this change is one that has seemed to affect more people than changes usually do.

What change is that? The all new Facebook Timeline.

How does the Facebook Timeline affect you as a real estate agent? That?s what we will examine in this week?s post.

To start off with, Facebook has created this handy tutorial video that we encourage you to watch.

The Timeline went active on March 30, 2012, so to begin you might want to clean up your content. Remove any posts that may be embarrassing or simply unwanted. That post about how bad traffic was on March 11, 2010? It can afford to go.

As you saw in the tutorial above, navigating through the timeline is a lot easier than before the timeline was incorporated, so finding these posts should not be too difficult (but maybe time consuming).

Another aspect to edit would include your ?likes.? Timeline reemerges these and places them at the top of your Timeline, below your cover photo. To review all your likes from each year you have used Facebook, and to browse the interests you added over the years, click the ?Likes? icon.

The first section will show you your interests. To add or remove some, click the ?Edit? button at the top. The section below that will show you the pages you liked by year, and your friends who also like that page. To remove any of these, click on the page?s name, then select ?Unlike.? That ?like? about helping so-and-so win American Idol in 2009 can probably afford to go as well.

Next, note that this new profile places a lot of importance on visuals and pictures. The biggest emphasis on visuals here is the cover photo. It is almost impossible to miss considering it spans the width of your Facebook profile right at the top as soon as someone visits your page.

Facebook says that you should ?fill this wide, open space with a unique image that represents you best. It?s the first thing people see when they visit your timeline.? That?s a great tip and we suggest getting creative. Consider using a photo that represents your real estate agency that includes your face.

Timeline also has a feature called Life Event. As a Facebook user and especially a real estate agent, updating this is a great idea to personalize yourself and let your clientele get to know you.

Update Life Event with information such as when you became a real estate agent, when you sold your first house, and perhaps personal information like when you got married, if you choose to share such information (which is completely your choice).

As you are already probably aware, we have a popular service called Social Matters, which builds and maintains social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and WordPress for you, so you don?t have the worry of keeping your channels fresh and engaging.

That is the bulk of what you should know about the new Facebook Timeline. If you have a question or would like to add a tip of your own, please share it in the comments below.
