Construction work has begun on the new $9.5 million Ocean Grove Integrated Children?s Centre.
The centre is being built with a mix of federal, state and local government funding, with the City of Greater Geelong the major contributor.
The Ocean Grove Children?s Centre is the first new major facility of its type in the City of Greater Geelong. The new children?s centre is part of a restructuring process in early childhood education, precipitated by a combination of the Gillard Government?s landmark minimum 15 hours 4 year old kindergarten reforms and a wave of young families moving to the region.
Local ward councillor Jan Farrell, who has been closely involved with the centre, said it would make a ?huge difference? to the families on the Bellarine.
?I?m very excited. This is going to be a wonderful centre,? she said.
State Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell said the centre would provide a ?one-stop-shop for early childhood development? when it opens in 2014.
?The Ocean Grove Children?s Centre (includes) a kindergarten, maternal and child health, early childhood intervention services, long day care and other family support programs,? she said.
?Providing children with the best heath care and education at a young age has a lasting impact on their development, ability and willingness to learn.?
The centre?s location, next to Bellarine Secondary College and close to both Surfside Primary School and Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School, will be convenient for many families.
?This new centre will complete a major education precinct in Ocean Grove and will be an example of how we can make early childhood development and education a seamless experience.?
A local Geelong builder, EJ Lyons and Sons Pty Ltd, will undertake the construction.
