What the World Looked Like with 5 Billion People (ContributorNetwork)

Today is a milestone in human history. Named 7 Billion Day by the United Nations, the world's population reached 7 billion people at 1:50 p.m. EDT, according to Worldometers, which bases its real-time population counter on previous United Nations numbers and estimates. At the time the counter reached the mark, there were 209,040 births recorded in the world. With this in mind, let's look at what the world looked like when there were 5 billion people in it.

* The world population reached 5 billion in 1987.

* On Jan. 1, the International Year of Shelter for Homeless people started.

* Aretha Franklin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She was the first woman inducted.

* The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose to close over 2,200 on Feb. 5, then a record.

* On Feb. 6, the ban that keeps people from smoking in federal buildings begins.

* On March 12, the lawsuits brought by Oliver North against the U.S. are dismissed.

* On March 19, the Food and Drug Administration approved Retrovir, also known as Zidovudine and AZT, the world's first medication to treat AIDS. To date, this medication has remained one of the most effective to treat the syndrome.

* The U.K. launched a massive campaign against AIDS and the first confirmed case of AIDS in the Soviet Union was recorded. This led to the nation's program against AIDS.

* On April 5, the "Married with Children" sitcom premiers on Fox.

* In August, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached 2,722.42. This was a record high for the index.

* On July 3, the Klaus Barbie, otherwise known as the Butcher of Lyons, was sentenced to life in prison for the 177 Nazi war crimes against humanity he conducted in Germany. He died in prison in 1991 from cancer.

* Gestapo chief in Lyon, Klaus Barbie, was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity.

* On Oct. 14, the U.S. dollar decreased in value and on Oct. 15, equity markets declined and on Oct. 16, the S&P 500 dropped 9 percent.

* By Oct. 19, now known as "Black Monday," the stock market crashed. The S&P 500 dropped 23 percent, or 508 points, while the S&P Futures dropped 29 percent. A temporary trading halt was considered.

* Because of the U.S. stock market crash, stock markets around the world followed. Australia's stock market fell 41.8 percent, Hong Kong's by 45.8 percent, Canada's by 22.5 percent and the U.K. by 26.4 percent.

* DNA evidence was used to convict Robert Melias for rape. This was the first time DNA was used to convict anyone of a crime.

* By Dec. 31, 20,000 had died from AIDS in the U.S., and 36,000 more were diagnosed.
